A Look at the Latest Football Safety Gear

Keeping Hydrated at the Start of a Hot Season

It may be the Fall semester, but it’s still very hot and humid during September. Hydration is the most important safety measure for any sport, especially football when players are wearing a lot of extra gear. Dehydration is the most significant factor in heat illness, which is why adequate fluid intake is critical. Below are a few tips from the Pro-Vision coaches.

  • Always have water available at all practices and games. In addition to a cooler there should ideally be a water fountain or faucet nearby so there’s no chance of running out.
  • Make sure there is a shady spot for players to sit during breaks and when they feel like they’re becoming over heated.
  • Work in a lot of water breaks throughout practices, or better yet allow athletes to get water whenever they are feeling thirsty.
  • Have athletes drink 16oz of water or a sports drink 15 minutes before practice or a game begins.
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion. They include: Player performance dropping off, thirst, irritability, dizziness, headache, cramps, weakness, chills, nausea, vomiting and heartburn. If players become dehydrated immediately get them into the shade, get their gear off and have them drink water or a sport drink slowly.

Getting Suited Up in Football Safety Gear

Football is well known for all of its safety gear. Over the years it has transformed dramatically to offer players much more protection than the leather helmets the early football players wore. Here’s a checklist for the safety gear that’s needed to protect players from concussions, neck injuries, knee injuries and more.

  • Helmet – The most crucial piece of equipment. Today helmets have ample foam padding on the inside and some also have a thin layer polymer to reinforce the padding. There are also padded caps that can go on the outside of helmets for added protection.
  • Face Mask – Connected to the helmet and comes in many different styles.
  • Chinstrap
  • Mouthguard
  • Shoulder Pads
  • Neck Roll
  • Elbow Pads
  • Blocking Pads
  • Hip Pads
  • Cup
  • Gloves
  • Side Pads
  • Knee Pads
  • Cleats
  • Knee Braces – Should be worn if the athlete has suffered from a knee injury in the past.

All football gear should be worn anytime a player steps onto the field. It’s also important to make sure the players know how to properly wear each piece of safety equipment.
