How the Manhood Development Program Gives Back in Houston

There are many things that young men learn during their time in the Manhood Development Program. At the core of Pro-Vision flagship program is community service. From the beginning the mission of the Manhood Program has always been “to develop the leadership, character and integrity among a generation of young men in our community.”

The Manhood Development Program is the longest running program at Pro-Vision. More than 24 years ago the program’s founder, Roynell Young, recognized the need for male mentors and role models among young men in traditionally underserved areas of Houston. Since then, the program has helped over 4,000 young men develop the skills and self-confidence needed to reach their full potential.

The goal of improving character development, purposeful living and community involvement is reached by teaching the Manhood Development men:

  • Ethics
  • Job Skills
  • Education Skills
  • Social Responsibility

Social enrichment and getting the young men invested in their community is a powerful tool in this process. Community service projects are held throughout the year to help the students realize the rewards of giving back and taking pride in the betterment their local area. Through community service they gain a better understanding of their role within the community and the part they play in its improvement.

2014 Manhood Development Program Community Projects

Throughout 2014 the Manhood Development men have participated in a number of community service events. Some of these community service projects include:

  • Planting trees in front of the local library for curb appeal and enhancing community pride
  • Taking food from the Pro-Vision Academy Urban Farm and passing it out to senior citizens in the Sunnyside Community
  • Passing out farm food to the homeless
  • Volunteering at the Houston Food Bank
  • Working on the Community Street Cleanup Project
  • Working with a Young Professionals Group to beautify the school’s landscape

Participation in community service projects is the key method in which Manhood Development men gain a sense of social responsibility. It is so important that students must participate in a certain amount of community service before they can advance to the next level in the program. As they advance, students begin taking on the role of mentor for younger students, which further instills the their sense of social responsibility.
