Being Involved in Your Child's School Matters
The involvement of the parents in their student’s education in linked to high academic success. Karen Smith Conway, a professor of economics at the University of New Hampshire, along with colleague Andrew Houtenville, recently conducted a study of over 10,000 eighth-grade students and linked parental involvement to student success rates. The research included information about the parents, teachers, and administrators. The study focused on frequency of discussions between the parent and the student about the class subjects and course selections at school, as well as regular attendance at school meetings, and parental participation in volunteer work at the child’s school. Overall, the results strongly indicated that the higher frequency of parental involvement in their child’s education led to a higher success rates.
In another study published by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, research concluded that students with involved parents had higher test scores, enrolled in higher-level programs, had improved school attendance, were more socially well-adjusted, and were more likely to attend a higher institution.

Opportunities for parents to volunteer are abundant and are available from the day of their intake interview all the way until the student’s graduation. For parents with busy weekday schedules, there are ample volunteer opportunities on Saturdays and even seasonally.
