Houston Charter School Students Give Back: Helping Animals in Need
All too often teenagers get flack for being on the receiving end of things rather than giving. But Pro-Vision Academy junior Malcolm Tate proved that the stereotype isn’t always true.
How Malcolm Tate Got Involved with The Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward Project
Malcolm has been a dog lover his entire life. He’s adopted numerous dogs in the past, so when he learned about The Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward Project it didn’t take him long to get involved.
He had no idea that his participation in a presentation at the Starbucks Fair would lead to his joining other animal lovers that volunteer for the project. That day he was at the Starbucks Fair to share information with others, but ended up learning a lot himself. The Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward Project is run by a group of volunteers and is funded solely on donations. Their mission is to help the growing number of stray dogs in the Fifth Ward area of Houston through compassionate care, adequate nutrition and placement in homes.
So many of us want to help out and think about doing something but fail to take action. Not Malcolm. He knew right away he was going to do something to help The Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward Project. Malcolm not only volunteered for the organization, he also organized a food drive and fundraiser at Pro-Vision Academy.
Malcolm utilized his creative skills to put together flyers that were posted around the school. He also asked his fellow students to get involved and give whatever they could to help. He quickly raised $30 in funds and 10 pounds of food. But most importantly, he raised awareness about the issues in the Fifth Ward and what others could do to help as well. His involvement has helped numerous dogs get the medical attention and assistance needed to find families that will love them for life.
When it comes to helping others in need, whether it’s our fellow humans or animals, no act is too small. What Malcolm did shows his ability to think about the bigger picture beyond himself and his immense compassion for others. It’s that kind of leadership and commitment to improving the world through volunteerism that Pro-Vision Academy hopes every student will come to know and understand. Malcolm Tate is clearly an apt pupil.
