Summer Fun: Free Community Activities for Houston Students
As Pro-Vision Academy students start preparing for summer, parents are probably wondering how they’re going to keep their kids occupied during the break. Fortunately, there are plenty of free and low cost summer activities for kids in the Museum District and other areas of Houston.
Explore Artwork, History and More at the Museums
Museums are a great way for kids to learn about different cultures and immerse themselves in a new experience. They can also learn at their own pace and pick exactly what interests them most. There are so many options in the Museum District of Houston it will take an entire summer to see them all.
Museums that are always free to explore include:
- Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
- Houston Center for Photography
- Houston Museum of African American Culture
- Rice University Art Gallery
- DiverseWorks Gallery Space
- The Jung Center of Houston
- The Menil Collection
- Lawndale Art Center
- Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
- Houston Arboretum and Nature Center
- Asia Society Texas Center – Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery not included
The Children’s Museum of Houston is free every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for kids and parents.
Here are some more fun museums that are free on certain days at certain times:
- Houston Museum of Natural Science – Thursday 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. during summer
- The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – Thursday 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- The John C. Freeman Weather Museum – Thursday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.
- The Health Museum – Thursday 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
- Buffalo Soldiers National Museum – Thursday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
- Holocaust Museum Houston – Thursday 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Go Wild at the Houston Zoo
Zoos are not only a lot of fun they’re a great way to teach kids about nature, ecosystems and all the other animals that call Earth home. The Houston Zoo is free from 2 p.m. to close on the first Tuesday of every month. Plan to get there as early as possible or visit the zoo several times throughout the summer because there’s a lot to see. There’s also a new Bug House that’s being opened this summer, so even if you’ve been to the Houston Zoo before you’ll get to experience all new types of wild life.
Enjoy Free Musical and Theatrical Entertainment
Music is something that’s enjoyed by people of all ages and can even aid in a child’s ability to learn other subjects. All around Houston there will be free musical and theatrical events during the summer.
Miller Outdoor Theater
There will be free concerts as well as Children’s Performance events all summer long, including the classic movie Big made into a musical and the Young Artists’ Concert series.
Discovery Green
On Thursday evenings during the summer the Discovery Green will host free concerts. Bring your picnic and settle in for some musical entertainment.
Learn Something New at the Local Library
The local libraries typically host free summer activities for kids like guitar lessons, computer classes, picture contests, field trips and more. Check your neighborhood library’s calendar for event times and days. Of course, your kids can always check out free reading material while they’re there.
