Celebrating Computer Learning Month at Pro-Vision Academy

Many of us early Millennials can remember the excitement and anticipation of going to the computer lab for the first time. Big, boxy computers with the green or white font were a novelty and it wasn’t quite certain what role computers would play in the future of education. What was considered an extracurricular activity about 25 years ago is now a necessity. Those weekly computer lab sessions have now grown into an entire month dedicated to computer learning.

About Computer Learning Month

Back 27 years ago the future of computers was uncertain, but clearly the people behind the Computer Learning Foundation knew how important it would become. In 1987 the Computer Learning Foundation designated October as Computer Learning Month. The initiative was and still is all about bringing focus to how computers can aid in a child’s education as well as how teachers can use computer technology to improve learning.

In our global economy and ever-connected world computers are opening up new possibilities for today’s students. The more educators can capitalize on technology the richer and more rewarding the experience will be for the students. In the past free downloadable applications, online courses and contests have been a part of Computer Learning Month. There are also many other organizations that participate during the month and offer free resources year round. In October teachers and students are encouraged to take advantage of resources like:

Another way to help spread computer knowledge during Computer Learning Month is to donate an old computer or laptop to Goodwill.

How to Get Involved This Computer Learning Month at Pro-Vision Academy

Pro-Vision Academy is proactive throughout the entire year to make sure students are given the resources needed to learn valuable computer skills. The school’s leadership understands the importance of leveraging technology and as such they have been heavily investing in new equipment and systems over the last few school years.

Now students attend daily computer labs where they start by learning basic skills and progress on to more advanced programs. The goal is to prepare students for higher education as well as the workforce. The charter school also implemented a pilot program last year that converted the fifth grade class to all-digital.

During Computer Learning Month we are actively seeking charter school volunteers to help with our computer lab sessions, share knowledge with our teachers or host a special training seminars. Contact us to get involved!
