Houston Activities That Keep Kids Active During the Summer
During the summer it’s easy for kids to end up spending more time in front of the TV than outside being physically active. Fortunately, there’s a lot going on in Houston this summer that can keep kids entertained while they get a little exercise.
Pro-Vision Academy Summer Programs
Just because school’s out for summer doesn’t mean that Pro-Vision Academy is completely shutting down. Our Urban Farm still needs to be maintained and some of our after school programs will continue, giving students a perfect opportunity to keep physically active in the off months.
Summer Sports
Sports camps have been a summer tradition for years. Not only do they keep kids active, but they can also help athletes improve their individual skillsets and bring what they learn back to the regular season. Organizations and institutions around the city are offering a wide variety of camps that cover just about every sport. Two great places to look into are Rice University and the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department. The latter offers free programs for kids aged 4-18 throughout the summer. Call the Recreation and Wellness Office at 832.395.7292 or 832.395.7294 to sign up for a team or class.
Summer Camps at the Y
The YMCA of Houston offers athletic programs for teens and kids year-round, but during the summer months they really go all out. Kids can join day camps, sports camps, family camps, teen camps or a specialty camp like gymnastics or martial arts.
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
Kids and teens that are already in the scouts can enjoy lots of outdoor and indoor summer activities including day camps, camp outs at Bovay Scout Ranch, dodge ball tournaments and community service events. If your son or daughter hasn’t yet joined a troop this summer is the perfect time to start.
The Sam Houston Area Council is celebrating its 100th year running the city’s Boy Scouts program, and the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council started in 1922.
Swimming Lessons
The summer is a great time to enroll kids in swimming lessons. They’ll get exercise in the water, learn a potentially life-saving skill and have fun keeping cool when it’s scorching outside. A few locations to look into include:
- Local YMCA
- Houston Swim Club
- Saint Street Swim
- Ragsdill Swim School – kids can also take other classes in art, computers and science
At the Provision Academy Houston charter school we promote health and physical activity during the school year. This summer we’re encouraging all students to pick up a sport or outdoor activity that can help them grow and learn in a whole new way.
